Beautiful — one the best daytrip/excursions I ever did was the rail line from Settle to Carlisle. I'm only mad that it was too late in the day to make it to Hadrian's Wall or spend much time in town. It's so nice to get away from all the tourists (I suppose it helps that it was about 5 degrees C and raining in October)

If your ever in the area again you’ll have to visit Birdoswald and Vindolanda if Hadrians Wall is your thing. Carlisle Castle has some 900+ years history and Tullie House museum is just across the road from it.

To be honest there is so much history from trains and railways, Royalty, military, Bonnie Prince Charlie, William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots, etc...

Absolutely...now that I have kids, our next overseas trip will probably be back to the UK for (it would be my fifth trip). This time I’m flying into Manchester and we’re sticking to the northern half of the country. Too many flights and trains are London-centric and IMHO miss many of the best parts of the country. The North is an amazing crossroads of Roman, Celtic, Scottish, and Norse history. It’s almost like the original melting pot of all modern Anglo cultural heritage

Thanks. So true. Cumbria (formerly Cumberland) has strong connections to all with the Cumbrian dialect descending from Old Norse. And the Celtic side (Cumbria meaning Land Of The Celts) with Cumbrics in Wales and up the west coat through Cheshire, Cumbria and on into Scotland.
